Learning Mandarin
-
"Chinese" is a broad term that can refer to the language as a whole, while "Mandarin" is the most widely spoken form of Chinese. It is the standard form of Chinese used throughout mainland China and the form taught at Mandarin Made Clear.
-
In the mid-20th century, many Chinese characters were simplified to make them easier to learn and write. Today, both Simplified and Traditional Chinese are used. At Mandarin Made Clear, we teach Simplified Chinese because it is easier for most beginners to learn and is the writing system used in mainland China, Singapore, and on the HSK proficiency exams. Students interested in Traditional Chinese can also be introduced to it upon request.
-
HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is the official Chinese language proficiency test for non-native speakers. Mandarin Made Clear uses the HSK curriculum as a clear, structured guide for building Mandarin skills, while emphasizing practical communication and lasting understanding.
-
Pinyin is the official system for writing Mandarin sounds using the Roman alphabet. It helps learners pronounce words accurately and type Chinese on computers and phones. We'll introduce Pinyin from the very beginning as a practical tool for learning Mandarin alongside Chinese characters. No prior knowledge is needed—we'll guide you through it step by step.
-
Not at all. Beginner Mandarin Foundations is designed for adults who are completely new to Mandarin, as well as those who have studied before but want to strengthen their foundation.
Whether you're starting from scratch or starting over, we'll help you build the confidence and understanding needed for long-term success.
-
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some students simply want to enjoy learning Mandarin a couple of evenings each week in a supportive, engaging environment. Others have more ambitious goals and are willing to spend additional time studying between classes.
The more consistently you practice, the more quickly you'll see progress. We'll provide guidance, review materials, and optional practice activities so you can continue building your Mandarin at a pace that matches your goals, schedule, and interests.
-
Yes. From your very first class, you'll begin speaking Mandarin in a supportive and encouraging environment. Throughout the course, you'll develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills together, building practical communication while gaining a clear understanding of how the language works.
-
Most beginners worry about pronunciation and tones, but they become much less intimidating once you begin using them. The key is to listen carefully and repeat what you hear. Your ears are remarkably good at learning new sound patterns, and with guided practice you'll gradually begin hearing the sounds of Mandarin more clearly and speaking with greater confidence.
-
Not at all. Adults learn differently than children, but they also bring many advantages to language learning, including life experience, problem-solving skills, and the ability to understand patterns. Our classes are designed specifically for adult learners, with clear explanations, practical communication, and a supportive pace that helps you build confidence step by step.
